Synopsis:

Cardiac Surgery, also known as Heart Surgery are surgical procedures on the heart to correct a range of heart diseases. The procedure can either be Open Heart or Closed Heart Surgery.

Open Heart Surgery: In this type of surgery, access to the Heart is through the chest wall. Cardiac Surgical procedures performed with Open Heart technique include operations directly on the blood vessels of the heart, on the muscle of the heart itself or valves.

Closed Heart Surgery: This type of surgery is usually performed in children rather than adults depending on the heart defect that needs to be corrected. An example of this procedure is Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) closure.

Cardiac Surgery today has evolved due to rapid advances in technology, science and better understanding of the various heart disease processes. Technology now plays a vital role in the surgical procedure itself.
